After Iwo Jima and before the Okinawa campaign began, Povich was in Saipan, which was officially secure; however, the 24th Infantry Regiment, comprised of black enlisted men and white officers, had been charged with clearing out remaining pockets of Japanese resistance. Eager to let his readers know that black Americans were among those men fighting for their country—and fighting well—Povich described some of their successful operations in a report dated March 17, 1945.

Since January 1 this unit of colored troops has killed 185 Japs, captured the same number on Saipan. They go in and blast the Nips out of the jungle with rifle and mortar barrages. They know how to fight in the jungle. They haven’t lost a man to the Japs. Only two of them have been wounded.
